BARBED VINE EARRINGS

Artisan made enamel spiked, barbed vine in red and black with blood red garnet drop and topped with Czech glass daggers, garnet and Swarovski crystals.

The mind moves in mysterious ways. I recently did an online show with the theme "Silver is the new Black" and my show partner made a lot of oil slick black, crusty lampwork beads which somehow got me thinking about the story of Briar Rose (aka Sleeping Beauty) and that got me thinking of the spiked, barbed briars surrounding the castle.  So I decided to make some winding briar vines with enamel on a base of iron and copper wire. I started with a base of red glass, added black and did some twisting and pulling of the hot glass so that some red shows up amid the black. I also aged it a bit in the flame to give it a more rustic look.  Above are faceted, dark garnets, black Czech glass daggers and Swarovski crystals. Hanging on an oxidized sterling chain amid the briars is a beautiful, faceted, blood red garnet teardrop.  All the wire is oxidized copper or iron. They measure a bit over 3 1/2" (8.9 cm) in length and are shown hanging from hook style, niobium ear wires.
 
Of course these are also perfect for those who love goth jewelry.  Nothing like a few spikes with some chain to complete your outfit.
I'm having fun making barbed designs so look for some more in the future.
